    Crestwood Hills Wahoos FAQs

    FAQS

Welcome to the 2018 Crestwood Hills Wahoos! Our coaches are:

    Head Coach: Parker Miles

    Assistant Coach: Francesca Grill

    What is the fee schedule?

First swimmer $155, second swimmer $135, every additional swimmer $105

Team suits are available at Swim and Tri.

There is a two-week trial period at the beginning of the season for any unsure swimmers for $35 per child. This can be converted to a team membership at the end of the trial (June 8th).

How long is the swim team season? Our swim team season lasts from our first practice on Tuesday, May 29th until July 29th (which is the last day of City Meet followed by our swim team banquet the next day).

    Our meet schedule is: 1) Intrasquad (H)6/7 2) @Gettysvue Country Club 6/13 3) Maryville Alcoa Flying Dolphins 6/19 (H)

    4)@West Side YMCA 6/26 5) Whittington Creek 7/10 6)@Smoky Mountain Invitational 7/14-15

    7)Gulfwood 7/19 8) @City Meet 7/27-7/29

When is practice? Our swim team is divided by age into several practice sessions. Ages 13-18 practice from 8-9:45. Ages 9-12 practice from 9:30-10:45. 8 and under practice from 10:30-11:15 and are known as our “Feeders” group because as they get older they are feeding our team membership. Please bring a towel and goggles. When practice ends, pool members are welcome to stay until the pool open at 11:30am (although they must exit the gate and be checked-in). Swim team-only members must leave the pool after practice. There is an evening practice from 6:30-7:30 Monday through Thursday for independent swimmers aged 9 and up.

Extra swim lessons: If you would like to provide your child with extra swim lessons, arrangements can be made with individual coaches. Fees are made payable to Crestwood Hills Recreation Center.

Who swims at swim meets? Swimmers of all abilities are welcome to take part in regular season meets. There is no concept of “first string” or “playing time” as in many team sports. The only hard requirement is that a swimmer must be able to complete one lap of freestyle (one length or 25m). This is a safety issue only-it doesn’t matter how long it takes your child to get from one end of the pool to the other. In fact, if your son or daughter doggie paddles all the way down the lane, stopping a few times along the way, and finishes last, the applause from the pool deck will be just as loud.

Swim meets have four basic strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. In some races, swimmers compete as individuals; there are also relays.

If your child is swimming in a meet, please sign up for a volunteer shift on the team website. There are over 70 different jobs at every meet and a parent from each family is required to work every meet. The swim team board realizes that a lot of our families have small children or children who need extra supervision and we will do our best to help you find a position that works for you! The best way to learn a job is to shadow another parent during our Intrasquad meet.

Swim Meet Overview: The main type of GKAISA meet is the “dual” meet, which means a home team against a visiting team. CWH has five of these on the schedule every summer. All are less than an hour’s driving distance from Crestwood (most are in Knoxville). Dual meets kick off at 6pm on weekdays. Team warm-ups are held before the meet starts. The home team swims their warm-up laps between 5:00-5:30. The visiting team warms up between 5:30-6:00. It is important, for the coaches’ sake, that you bring your children to the pool at least 30 minutes before the designated warm-up time. This will give you and your swimmers time to put on their swim caps, goggles, sunscreen, and get mentally ready to swim. Please bring your own folding chairs etc. to set up in the area reserved for the team.

The best foods to eat before a meet are carbohydrates. During the meet, please give your swimmers carbs, fruit, water, and sports drinks. Our concession stand will also be open; all concession profits go right back to support our swim team. Dual meets are usually finished in 3 hours. Your swimmer is allowed to swim up to four separate events in a dual meet; two of these can be relays.

What happens if it rains before practice or during practice? If it rains, practice continues as scheduled. If either lightning or thunder occurs, the pool policy is to clear the pool and wait 30 minutes before swimming again.

What about family vacations/other commitments? You must RSVP for each meet on the swim team website. If you don’t RSVP, the coaches will not enter your child in the meet.

Miscellaneous: Swim team fees include team t-shirt and cap, Swim team fees do not cover the swim team banquet, end of season coaches’ gifts, team/individual photos, Smoky and City Meet t-shirts and City Meet parking passes.

Each family will have a file folder under the pavilion closest to the kiddie pool. Please check this file after meets because it will contain any ribbons that were won.
